Zefyri police operation dismantles 700,000 euro telephone scam ring

The Hellenic Police dismantled a highly organized criminal group in the Zefyri area of Attica, specializing in sophisticated telephone scams and thefts. Eight individuals were arrested, including two leaders of the organization.

Operating since at least June, the group reportedly embezzled over 700,000 euros. The criminals used a methodical approach, obtaining names from telephone directories and websites to target victims. They impersonated employees of DEDDIE, accountants, and representatives of energy or telecommunications companies.

To increase credibility, the group used recorded automated messages from DEDDIE and simulated emergency sirens. They would convince victims to leave cash or valuables in accessible locations within or near their homes, where other members would then retrieve them. In some instances, members even impersonated police officers to verify the value of the stolen items after the theft.
