Dündar Ziya Gültekin elected Deputy Mayor of Üsküdar

Dündar Ziya Gültekin has been elected Deputy Mayor of Üsküdar following a contentious four-round voting process in the Üsküdar Municipal Council. Gültekin, representing the People's Alliance (AK Party and MHP), secured 23 votes in the final round, defeating the joint candidate from the CHP and Yeni Parti, Sibel Tan Çetinkaya, who received 19 votes.

The election follows the arrest and removal from office of the previous Mayor, Sinem Dedetaş, who faces investigations involving charges of bribery, extortion, and forming a criminal organization. The leadership transition has sparked intense political debate, with opposition leaders from the CHP and Yeni Parti alleging that the election results were manipulated through judicial pressure and the transfer of council members to the AK Party.

Opposition figures, including Ekrem İmamoğlu and Müslim Sarı, have criticized the process, claiming that the democratic will of the voters was undermined by the arrest of council members and the strategic movement of political affiliations within the council. Meanwhile, AK Party officials have characterized the outcome as a historic victory and a return to service for the district.
