Zhejiang University study examines brain response to short-form videos

Researchers at Zhejiang University have conducted a study investigating how short-form videos affect brain activity and cognitive functions. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy, scientists monitored 56 young adults while they viewed various video categories, including social interactions, pets, and landscapes.

The study found that while watching engaging short videos, activity decreases in two specific brain regions: the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC). These areas are primarily associated with decision-making and cognitive control. While the research does not conclude that short videos cause addiction or brain damage, it suggests that the consumption of such content may influence an individual's capacity for cognitive control and decision-making processes.
