Wicknell Chivayo dies in Zimbabwe helicopter crash

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, died on September 30 following a helicopter crash in the Marondera rural area. The accident, which occurred while the couple was returning from their rural home in Chikomba, claimed the lives of all six people on board, including two pilots and a security aide.

Chivayo, known for his flamboyant lifestyle and high-profile social media presence, was granted provincial hero status by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. His funeral has drawn significant attention due to the extravagant nature of the arrangements, including a US$217,000 gold casket and custom-designed coffins shaped like luxury vehicles, specifically a Rolls-Royce and a Mercedes-Benz.

The tragedy has also sparked national debate regarding Zimbabwe’s public healthcare and emergency response infrastructure. Advocacy groups, such as Citizens Watch Zimbabwe, have used the incident to call for increased investment in medical facilities and emergency services outside major cities to prevent similar fatalities in the future.
