Zimbabwe President nominates Kudakwashe Tagwirei to Senate

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has nominated businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei and nine others for appointment to the Zimbabwean Senate. The nominations follow the enactment of Constitutional Amendment Act No. 3, which expanded the upper house from 80 to 90 members. Speaker of Parliament Jacob Mudenda announced the names during a National Assembly sitting, stating the nominees were recommended for their professional skills and competencies.

Tagwirei, the founder of Sakunda Holdings and a member of the Zanu-PF Central Committee, is the most prominent figure on the list. His nomination has drawn attention due to his significant business interests and close ties to the administration. Tagwirei was sanctioned by the United States in 2020 over allegations regarding state contracts and foreign currency access, though he and the government have rejected all wrongdoing.

The other nine nominees include several senior Zanu-PF figures: Jabulani Sibanda, Mary Mliswa, Goodwill Masimirembwa, Nokhuthula Matsikanyere, retired General Gibson Mashingaidze, Lucy Chitaga, Makhosini Hlongwane, Brilliant Dube, and Irene Mutumbwa. The appointments have sparked discussions regarding the intersection of political influence and business interests within the country’s state institutions.
