Zimbabwe Repatriation and South Africa Deportations Fuel Migration Tensions

Zimbabwe's cabinet announced a series of governance and security reforms and provided an update on the repatriation of an estimated 1.4 million Zimbabwean nationals returning from South Africa. The reforms include the Municipal Police and Courts Bill 2026, which aims to give local authorities greater regulatory powers.

South Africa reported that between 7 June and 14 July 2026 it deported 72,906 irregular migrants, mainly citizens of Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique, as part of a new migration‑management strategy. The government highlighted increased border operations, a temporary repatriation centre in Musina and broader efforts to modernise immigration controls.
