Zimbabwe strengthens mineral governance and smuggling surveillance

Zimbabwe is intensifying efforts to improve mineral governance and combat illicit resource movement. The Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ) reported 18 cases of suspected smuggling and irregular mineral movement between January and August 2026. These cases involve approximately 2,654.88 tonnes of material, including lithium, chrome, and silica, with offenses ranging from falsified export papers to cargo misdeclaration.

Simultaneously, the Association of Mine Surveyors of Zimbabwe (AMSZ) is expanding its professional mandate to support national mining growth and compliance. During its 41st Annual General Meeting in Masvingo, association leadership emphasized that surveyors are moving beyond traditional roles to take responsibility for critical mine data, such as grades and coordinates. This shift aims to provide the technical expertise necessary to assist the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development in managing the country’s mineral resources and ensuring industry integrity.
