Zimbabwean mining sector oversight and governance

Zimbabwe is undertaking efforts to oversee and regulate its mineral and energy sectors. The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Mining Development conducted a fact-finding mission to assess industrial linkages between coal, coke, cement, and power production. This mission included a visit to the Kamativi Mining Company, a joint venture expanding its lithium operations through significant multi-phase investments. However, the committee faced resistance from management at the state-owned Hwange Colliery Company Limited, who denied access to officials.

In parallel, the country is intensifying governance to combat illicit resource movement. The Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe reported 18 cases of suspected smuggling involving lithium, chrome, and silica between January and August 2026. To support industry integrity and resource management, the Association of Mine Surveyors of Zimbabwe is expanding its role to provide critical technical data, such as mineral grades and coordinates, to the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development.
