Zimbabwean Parliamentary Mines Committee conducts sector fact-finding mission
The Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Mining Development is conducting a fact-finding mission across Zimbabwe’s energy and mineral sectors to assess industrial linkages between coal, coke, cement, and power production.
During the tour, the committee visited Kamativi Mining Company (KMC), a joint venture between China’s Yahua Group and Kamativi Tin Mines. KMC is expanding its lithium operations following a revival from tin production. Phase I, commissioned in April 2024, involved a US$100 million investment to process 300,000 tonnes of raw spodumene ore annually. Future expansions include a US$149 million Phase II and a lithium sulphate project exceeding US$200 million, expected to be operational by July 2027. These developments align with government policies to promote local mineral beneficiation.
However, the committee’s mission faced a setback when management at the state-owned Hwange Colliery Company Limited denied them access. Officials at the colliery stated they had not been notified of the scheduled visit. Committee Chairman Remigious Matangira expressed frustration over the denial, noting that the committee’s oversight is a constitutional duty and that the government is the majority shareholder of the colliery.
