Zimbabweans stranded in Johannesburg amid repatriation delays

Hundreds of Zimbabwean citizens are stranded at the former Zimbabwean consulate in Bruma, Johannesburg, following anti-migrant protests in South Africa. The displacement, which began in mid-August 2026, has affected many foreign nationals in areas such as Hillbrow, Pretoria, and Vereeniging.

More than 300 individuals are currently gathered at the consulate premises, with an estimated 3,000 Zimbabweans awaiting repatriation nationwide. While the Zimbabwean government previously organized regular bus services, these operations have reportedly ceased in recent weeks due to budget constraints. This has left displaced families, including pregnant women and children, in precarious living conditions.

Civil society groups, including the Siyafana Sonke Action Campaign, are providing essential aid such as food, medical supplies, and hygiene products. However, humanitarian concerns are mounting; advocates have reported water shortages, limited sanitation facilities, and a diarrhea outbreak at the site. There are urgent calls for both the South African and Zimbabwean governments to intervene and fast-track the repatriation process to mitigate serious health risks.
