Zimbabwean migrant repatriation from South Africa
Overview
Following anti-migrant unrest in South Africa, a significant number of Zimbabwean citizens have fled to their home country. By late July 2026, Zimbabwean Information Minister Zhemu Soda reported that 116,670 Zimbabweans had returned, with 36,940 receiving government assistance and 79,730 returning independently.
Many returnees face severe economic difficulties and lack the resources to rebuild their lives. While approximately 38,057 individuals have registered for employment, reintegration remains a major challenge.
In Johannesburg, hundreds of displaced Zimbabweans remained stranded at the former consulate in Bruma due to delays in repatriation. While the Zimbabwean government previously provided bus services, these operations reportedly ceased due to budget constraints. This has led to mounting humanitarian concerns, including water shortages, sanitation issues, and a diarrhea outbreak among those awaiting transport.
