Zimbabweans struggle to reintegrate after fleeing South African xenophobia
Thousands of Zimbabweans are struggling to reintegrate into their home country after fleeing xenophobic unrest in South Africa. Following a June 30 deadline set by anti-immigrant activists, many undocumented migrants left South Africa due to fears of violence and home raids, despite the South African government stating the date would be a normal day and warning against intimidation.
According to Zimbabwean Information Minister Zhemu Soda, 116,670 Zimbabweans had returned from South Africa by July 28. Of these, 36,940 were assisted by the government, while 79,730 returned independently. Approximately 38,057 returnees have registered for employment.
Many returnees face severe economic challenges, often returning without jobs or adequate support systems. Reverend Useni Sibanda, executive director of the Zimbabwe Christian Alliance, noted that many individuals had spent years abroad and now find themselves without the resources necessary to rebuild their lives in Zimbabwe.
