Zlín burnt building demolition to continue after preservation efforts fail

Demolition of a burnt-out building in the historic Baťa industrial complex in Zlín will proceed despite attempts to preserve a portion of the structure. The owner, Cream, had paused work to investigate technical possibilities for saving a 24 by 12-meter, 11-story northeastern fragment of the building as an architectural memorial.

Following an assessment by structural engineers and experts, it was determined that while a technical solution for preservation might exist, the execution would pose an “unacceptable risk” to occupational safety. Consequently, specialists have prohibited further efforts to secure the fragment.

Legislative hurdles also play a role, as the building authority's decision mandates the immediate removal of the structure in the public interest. To honor the site's history, the company has conducted a detailed 3D scan of the eastern facade to create digital documentation of the original architecture for future generations. Demolition is expected to resume shortly, with the remaining ruins likely to be cleared within the coming week.
