Zlín building demolition continues after preservation pause

Demolition of the fire-damaged 11-storey Building 34 in Zlín’s former Baťa complex is progressing toward completion. Following the July 9 fire, which likely originated in a ninth-floor warehouse leased by Vasky, the structure suffered partial collapses on its north and west sides. Demolition firm Build Synergy has been dismantling the building from the top down using a heavy excavator with hydraulic shears.

Work was recently paused as the owner, Cream, investigated technical possibilities to preserve a 24 by 12-meter northeastern fragment of the building as an architectural memorial. However, structural engineers and experts determined that executing such a preservation would pose an “unacceptable risk” to occupational safety. Additionally, building authorities have mandated the immediate removal of the structure in the public interest. To document the site's history, the company has conducted a detailed 3D scan of the eastern facade for digital preservation.

Rough demolition is expected to conclude shortly, leaving approximately 140,000 tons of debris on-site for sorting and removal. While the owner must clear the entire site by December 15, authorities previously mandated a shorter six-week window to remove sections posing immediate safety risks. Police investigations into potential criminal negligence regarding the fire's cause continue.
