Zlín Building 34 demolition halted after intruder
Overview
The July 9 fire that gutted the ninth-floor shoe-warehouse in Building 34 of Zlín’s former Baťa complex left the 11-storey tower half collapsed. After two weeks of firefighting, the blaze was declared extinguished on 22 July. Police are treating the incident as a possible crime of general danger caused by negligence.
The municipal building authority ordered the unsafe sections to be removed immediately and required full demolition by 15 December 2026. Owner Cream transferred the site to demolition contractor Build Synergy on 5 August. Using a Caterpillar 390 F UHD excavator (≈100 t) with a 42-metre arm and hydraulic shears, the crew began dismantling the main torso that week, working floor by floor. The schedule targets removal of the main structure within 25 working days, with debris cleared by the December deadline, provided static-condition and wind-speed limits are respected.
Demolition activities were recently interrupted following a security breach. An unidentified man entered the fire-damaged structure and reached as high as the fourth floor, prompting an immediate halt to work. Security cameras owned by Cream detected the intruder, and firefighters used a drone to locate him due to the risk of uncontrolled structural collapse in the eastern wing. The individual was found, exited the building, and was taken into police custody on suspicion of unlawful conduct.
The investigation into the fire’s cause continues, and demolition is expected to resume once safety concerns are addressed.
