Zlín high-rise fire collapses 34‑storey building, tourist sites remain open
On July 9, a major fire engulfed a 34‑storey high‑rise in Zlín, part of the former Baťa factory complex. The blaze caused the collapse of part of the structure but, remarkably, no injuries were reported. Firefighters continued to extinguish remaining hotspots and are monitoring wind speeds with an anemometer; if gusts exceed 70 km/h, nearby buildings will be evacuated. Drones equipped with thermal cameras and LIDAR were employed to locate hidden fire sources and to create a digital imprint of the damaged site for future analysis.
Authorities confirmed that the incident is being investigated as a possible crime of general danger caused by negligence, with a potential five‑year prison sentence for any perpetrator. Police and fire investigators are working together to determine the cause. Despite the damage, all major tourist attractions in Zlín—including the Baťa skyscraper, the Tomáš Baťa monument, the Baťa Institute, and the regional art gallery—remain open, and the city urges visitors to continue supporting local hotels, restaurants, and cultural venues.
