Greek MP Zoi Konstantopoulou Calls Police on ND Lawmakers During Ethics Committee Clash

During a closed‑door session of the Hellenic Parliament’s Committee of Ethics, Zoi Konstantopoulou, president of the Freedom Movement, demanded police intervention, calling the emergency number “100” and accusing New Democracy (ND) MPs of attempting extortion. She alleged the ND members were colluding with MP Maria Syreggela, who has a €300,000 defamation suit against her, and accused them of “a blatant crime”.

The committee, dominated by ND votes, recommended a formal reprimand (mope) against Konstantopoulou and referred the matter to Parliament Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis. The session was marked by heated exchanges, including a verbal clash with KKE MP Nikos Karathanassopoulos – “Κύριε Καραθανασούλου εσείς απέχετε; Ή παίρνετε γραμμή από τον Γεωργαντά?” – and a dispute with ND State MP Ioanna Lytri‑vi, who was seen in tears. Other MPs, such as Alexandros Kazamia and Dimitris Kairidis, also engaged in confrontational dialogue in the corridor. Konstantopoulou described the proceedings as “anti‑constitutional” and “unprecedented”.
