Greek MP Konstantopoulou immunity battles

Overview

In early July 2026, Freedom Movement leader Zoi Konstantopoulou called police into an ethics‑committee hearing, accusing New Democracy MPs of extortion. The committee, dominated by the governing party, recommended a formal reprimand.

Two weeks later the plenary voted 160‑63‑6 to lift her parliamentary immunity after a defamation suit by businessman Achilleas Davelis. The same sitting stripped independent deputy Mario Salmas of immunity over remarks about Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis.

On 29 July the Parliamentary Ethics Committee again voted by majority to recommend that the plenary lift Konstantopoulou’s immunity, this time in response to a criminal complaint by journalist Petros Kousoulou. New Democracy members backed the recommendation, PASOK members were absent, other opposition parties voted against, and Greek Solution reserved judgment. The committee criticised the disproportionate focus on her case, noted her absence and a letter urging the body to first examine alleged sexist attacks by New Democracy MPs.

The next day a new confrontation unfolded in the parliamentary police cafeteria. Konstantopoulou called the emergency number 100 and demanded the arrest of journalist Vasiliki Polizou, alleging she was not a journalist and belonged to a criminal organisation. Police followed standard identification procedures, escorted Polizou—who lacked an identification document—to the Parliamentary Police Station for verification, and she later announced plans to sue for illegal obstruction and unlawful video recording. Parliament President Nikitas Kaklamanis later stressed that only the speaker can give commands in the chamber, affirmed full support for parliamentary staff, and said the legal dispute with Polizou is already before the courts.
