Flores Island earthquake: 84-year-old woman rescued alive after three days

An 84-year-old paralyzed woman, Paulina Pompi, has been rescued alive from the rubble of her home three days after a massive 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Flores Island, Indonesia.

The earthquake has resulted in at least 73 deaths and injured more than 900 people. According to the National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB), nearly 60,000 people have been displaced as hundreds of homes were destroyed. Pompi had been trapped under collapsed bamboo walls since Saturday morning. Her family, believing she had already been moved to a shelter, returned to the site to search for her.

Local official Rudolphus Rimba described the rescue as ‘almost a miracle,’ noting that while she is physically weak from lack of food and water, she has not sustained major injuries. The region, located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, continues to experience significant seismic activity, with over 3,000 aftershocks recorded since the initial quake, at least 86 of which were strong enough to be felt by residents. Approximately 400 tons of aid, including food, water, and medicine, have been delivered to the affected area.
