Mohan Bhagwat to speak at Madison Square Garden amid NYC political opposition

Mohan Bhagwat, chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), is scheduled to speak at Madison Square Garden on August 29 during the ‘Universal Oneness Celebration’. The event, organized by the American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD Forum), is part of a global outreach tour marking the RSS's centenary year and is expected to draw approximately 5,000 attendees.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has expressed opposition to the event, citing concerns over the RSS's exclusionary ideology and its impact on a pluralistic society. However, Mamdani noted that the municipal administration may lack the legal jurisdiction to cancel a privately organized gathering.

In response to the controversy, the Hindu American Foundation (HAF) issued a safety advisory, urging attendees to remain vigilant and avoid confrontations with protesters. Meanwhile, the RSS has defended the event as an inclusive interfaith engagement designed to foster dialogue and mutual respect. Additionally, the social media platform X reportedly suspended the account of organizers associated with the event.
