Zoladex to lose French reimbursement starting December 2026
The French government has approved the removal of Zoladex from the list of medications reimbursed by Social Security, effective December 15, 2026. The decision follows a request from the manufacturer, AstraZeneca, which cited economic reasons, stating that the current price of the medication no longer ensures its sustainable provision within the French reimbursement framework.
Zoladex is a subcutaneous implant used in the treatment of certain hormone-dependent breast cancers and prostate cancers. While the medication will no longer be covered by the state, it will remain available for purchase in pharmacies, meaning patients will be responsible for the full cost.
The Haute Autorité de Santé (HAS) Transparency Commission has expressed reservations regarding the decision, noting that no new clinical data has emerged to justify the removal of the drug from the reimbursement list. Patients currently undergoing treatment are advised to consult their medical specialists to discuss potential alternatives or changes in coverage.
