Zondacrypto investigation expands amid questions over state involvement
The investigation into the Zondacrypto cryptocurrency exchange scandal is expanding as a special team of prosecutors begins its work. The case has drawn comparisons to the Amber Gold fraud due to the scale of the controversy and the complexities surrounding the recovery of funds.
Questions have been raised regarding the whereabouts of former CEO Przemysław Kral. While prosecutors have confirmed he faces charges, his exact location remains undisclosed, and critics have noted the unusual absence of an extradition request despite his suspected presence abroad. Kral is being represented by Roman Giertych.
The Wiara i Czyn Association has called for a broader probe, suggesting that the investigation should extend beyond individual officers to include representatives from the Ministry of the Interior and Administration and the Ministry of Finance. The association argues that these institutions engaged in training programs and professional development collaborations with Zondacrypto, raising questions about why government agencies continued to cooperate with the firm despite ongoing legal scrutiny.
Victims of the exchange are being directed to Tallinn, Estonia, to claim their debts following the bankruptcy of the Estonian operator. This directive has faced criticism from legal circles, including the Ad Vocem Prosecutors' Association, due to the financial burden it places on Polish citizens seeking restitution.
