Zonguldak experiences fatal building collapse and mine explosion

The Zonguldak province in Turkey has been struck by two separate tragedies. In the Meşrutiyet neighborhood of the central district, a multi-story building collapsed on Sütliyen Street. The collapse resulted in the death of 74-year-old Türkan Akçaharman Özhan, while her brother, Kenan Akçaharman, was rescued from the rubble with injuries. Following the incident, authorities evacuated seven nearby buildings as a precaution, displacing approximately 30 residents. Zonguldak Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation, issuing detention orders for a construction employer, an excavator operator, and an architect.

Separately, a methane gas explosion (firedamp) occurred at a private coal mine in the Gelik town of Kilimli district. The explosion killed at least three miners, including Cengiz Bürükbaşı and Recep Çolakoğlu. Five other workers were injured, with two reported to be in critical condition and intubated due to burns. Emergency teams, including AFAD and TTK rescue units, conducted operations to reach workers trapped underground. Local political leaders have called for investigations into mining safety and ventilation infrastructure following the disaster.
