Slovakia to reduce second-class train fares by 50 percent

Starting October 1, Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK) will implement a 50 percent reduction in domestic second-class train fares for a 30-day period. This price cut applies to standard, discounted, single-use, and time-based tickets, including weekly and monthly passes. The reduction also extends to the Tatra Electric Railway (TEŽ) and the Cog Railway (OŽ). However, the discount does not apply to first-class travel, international journeys, seat reservations, sleeper berths, or additional service fees such as bicycle or pet transport.

In response to high fuel prices, the Slovak Ministry of Transport is also exploring ways to lower costs for regional bus services and urban mass transit (MHD). Minister Jozef Ráž indicated that the government is negotiating with regional authorities to potentially reduce bus fares by 30 to 50 percent. Additionally, the Ministry is considering lowering the age threshold for the surcharge applied to tickets purchased directly on trains from 65 to 60 years to assist passengers without smartphones and reduce the workload on train conductors.
