ZXMoto unveils 1,000 cc boxer engine prototype
At the CIMA 2026 exhibition, Chinese manufacturer ZXMoto unveiled a prototype of a new 1,000 cc twin-cylinder boxer engine designed for large adventure-style motorcycles. The engine architecture closely mirrors technical solutions used by BMW Motorrad, featuring horizontally opposed cylinders, a longitudinal crankshaft, and a shaft final drive.
While specific technical data remains unofficial, the engine is expected to produce over 100 hp. Notably, ZXMoto has opted for full liquid cooling, a departure from BMW’s air/liquid hybrid system. This design choice aims for more precise thermal control and stricter emission compliance, which is critical for entering the European market. The motorcycle utilizing this engine, such as the 820X trail model, is projected to be available for sale as early as 2027.
