2026 Breeders’ Cup World Championships

Overview

The 2026 Breeders’ Cup World Championships are scheduled for October 30-31 at Keeneland Race Course. The event features 14 Grade 1 races with total purses and awards exceeding $34 million. This marks the fourth time Keeneland has hosted the championships, following previous iterations in 2015, 2020, and 2022.

Pre-entries have reached a record 255, representing 222 individual horses, including 79 international contenders from 10 countries across six continents. In the $7 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic, Japan-based defending winner Forever Young remains a headliner. He aims to become only the third horse to win back-to-back editions of the race. A highly anticipated matchup is expected between Forever Young and the 2025 Horse of the Year, Sovereignty, who is expected to target the Classic following a missed Jockey Club Gold Cup due to a hoof abscess. Other notable contenders in the Classic field include Golden Tempo, Magnitude, and Further Ado.

In the Mile, Notable Speech is expected to face Rhetorical and Deterministic. The Dirt Mile field may include Grade 1 winners such as The Puma, Knightsbridge, Hymn, and Forged Steel, with additional possible entrants like Napoleon Solo and Iron Man Cal.

Previous withdrawals from the lineup included Phileas Fogg (sore foot) from the Classic, as well as Ten Bob Tony, Gstaad, and Constitution River from the Mile. In the Juvenile Turf Sprint, Drazinda and Nabati withdrew, while the Juvenile field was reduced to eight horses following the exit of Net Par, leaving Bob Baffert’s undefeated Hughes as a leader. Other withdrawals included Lambourn and Minnie Hauk from the Turf race.
