2026 international football individual awards

Overview

In October 2026, the football community focused on major individual awards, specifically the 70th anniversary Ballon d’Or ceremony scheduled for October 26 at the London Palladium. The ceremony, which honors the best male and female players, coaches, and goals, will be available via the DAZN streaming platform. Kylian Mbappé, playing for Real Madrid, was named the winner of the 2026 Onze d’Or award, an honor decided by readers of Onze Mondial magazine. Mbappé secured 48.2% of the votes, surpassing João Neves (11.9%) and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (10.8%). This recognition follows a prolific season in which he became the all-time leading goalscorer in World Cup history, won the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot with 10 goals, and finished as the top scorer in the last Champions League edition with 15 goals. Following the award, Mbappé addressed media portrayals regarding his Ballon d’Or ambitions, stating that certain perceptions can be “out of step with reality” and noting that his confidence is a necessary motivation for greatness. As the Ballon d’Or ceremony approaches, the race for the top prize remains highly competitive. While Mbappé’s Onze d’Or win provides momentum, analysts note a split in the race between domestic dominance and international success. Harry Kane has emerged as the Polymarket favorite with a 67.6% chance of winning, overtaking Lamine Yamal, who holds a 25.3% chance. Kane’s surge is attributed to a record-breaking season with Bayern Munich, where he recorded 61 goals in 51 games and won the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal, and the European Golden Shoe. Other major contenders include Rodri and Yamal, whose candidacy has been bolstered by a World Cup victory with Spain. Hours before the scheduled ceremony, the official Ballon d’Or website mistakenly published three premature articles naming Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé, and Lamine Yamal as the winners.
