Overview

The Legatum Institute released its 2026 Prosperity Index, which ranks nations based on development, freedom, and social cohesion. The 2026 edition introduced a revised methodology and a new “average‑p” calculation designed to penalize countries with significant weaknesses in any single pillar, preventing high performance in one area from masking deficiencies in another.

Globally, Switzerland secured the top position. In Africa, Mauritius was ranked as the highest-performing nation at 45th worldwide. In North Africa, Tunisia placed 75th, followed by Morocco at 76th. Morocco demonstrated particular strength in economic freedom, ranking 54th, and family cohesion and integrity, ranking 36th, though it faced challenges in education, where it ranked 122nd.
