In late July 2026 the contest for two Senate seats in the Brazilian state of Tocantins intensified as candidates scrambled to secure local alliances. On 22 July, incumbent Senator Eduardo Gomes, First Vice‑President of the Senate, received public endorsements from 21 of the 23 city councilors in Palmas and support from mayor Wagner Rodrigues and other regional leaders, reinforcing his municipal backing ahead of the election. A week later, Federal Deputy Carlos Gaguim announced a broad coalition in Porto Nacional that brought together the mayor, vice‑mayor, former mayor, municipal chamber leadership and several councilors. A poll released after the announcement placed Gaguim among the two leading Senate hopefuls, with 16.9 % support in a spontaneous survey and 26.8 % when respondents were given a list of names. He also secured pledges from mayors and councilors in the municipalities of Fátima, Oliveira de Fátima, Pindorama and Ponte Alta, and the vice‑prefect of Santa Rosa, Levi Teixeira. Governor Wanderlei Barbosa publicly endorsed Gaguim after a meeting in Palmas, underscoring a long‑standing partnership and a united regional front ahead of party conventions slated for early August 2026. The endorsement was made public on 27 July at a political gathering in Palmas, attended by Senator Eduardo Gomes, Deputy Eli Borges and other regional leaders. Gaguim emphasized the unity of the governing group as a decisive factor and highlighted his long‑standing work with local mayors. Analysts noted the endorsement could reshape the race, creating uncertainty for fellow Republican deputy Eli Borges.
