Overview

The contest for two Senate seats in Tocantins has sharpened as local endorsements and polling data have reshaped the field. On 22 July, incumbent Senator Eduardo Gomes secured a sweeping municipal endorsement in the state capital, with 21 of the 23 city councilors in Palmas backing his re-election. The same day, mayor Wagner Rodrigues of Araguaína announced his support for Gomes and fellow candidate Irajá Abreu. A week later, Federal Deputy Carlos Gaguim expanded his regional network. On 27 July, Governor Wanderlei Barbosa publicly reinforced Gaguim’s candidacy, describing him as a “prepared and loyal partner for the state’s municipalities.” This endorsement, joined by dozens of mayors, intensified competition for the other Republican hopeful, Deputy Eli Borges. A Brasmarket poll released on 4 August, based on interviews conducted 29–31 July, placed Gomes in first place with 31.7% of voting intentions, while Gaguim held second place with 23.2%. On 17 August, Gaguim officially launched his Senate campaign in Araguaína. The kickoff included participation in the 18th Cavalgada do Novo Horizonte and received a public endorsement from state deputy Jorge Frederico. The event also introduced Lucas Campelo’s campaign for federal deputy, presented as part of a joint political project with Gaguim. Gaguim has since continued to secure support from municipal leaders in Porto Nacional, Alvorada, and Rio Sono. On the same day, Senator Eduardo Gomes met with members of the “O Tocantins é Flávio Bolsonaro” movement in Palmas to coordinate political actions. Gomes noted a trend of independent voters following Jair Bolsonaro’s voter base toward Flávio Bolsonaro. Additionally, Luiz Pastore, a candidate for first substitute on Gomes’s Senate ticket, declared assets totaling R$ 677.74 million to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
