Overview

On the night of 1 August 2026 a homemade IED detonated outside the Balzi Rossi Italian restaurant on Kudrinskaya Square in central Moscow. The device, concealed in a gift‑wrapped box carried by a woman, was stopped by a security guard and then exploded remotely, killing the woman, the guard and a patron. Two additional victims later died in hospital, bringing the confirmed death toll to at least five, and at least 21 people were wounded, many seriously. The blast occurred during a private banquet celebrating General Aleksandr Chaiko’s 55th birthday; the general was unharmed. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin called the act a “brutal terrorist act.” The Russian National Anti‑Terrorism Committee opened a terrorism investigation, while forensic teams continue to examine a possible gas‑leak factor. The Russian embassy in Italy blamed Ukrainian terrorists, though no group has claimed responsibility. Chef Carmine Alfieri and his kitchen staff escaped injury, and authorities are providing assistance to victims’ families.
