Romania transport infrastructure upgrades

In early August 2026 Romania reported progress on several major transport projects. The Bucharest tram line Lot 6, a 5.3‑km stretch serving lines 16 and 36, had moved beyond 90 % excavation, with work shifting to support walls, contact poles and utility relocations, though the March 2027 completion target remained uncertain. Simultaneously, the Prahova County Council confirmed that the Comarnic bypass had entered the asphalt‑laying phase, aiming for an August finish after a delayed June deadline.

The following day, attention turned to the railway sector. A rehabilitation programme for eight tunnels on the Bumbești–Livezeni line in the Defileul Jiului was announced. The project, valued at about 148 million lei, had awarded the contract to Strabag in autumn 2025, but as of July 2026 it was still in the acquisition phase, with design and construction yet to start. The works aim to lift speed and tonnage restrictions, improve safety and reduce flood risk on one of Romania’s most challenging railway corridors.

Together, these updates illustrate Romania’s ongoing commitment to modernising both urban transit and regional rail and road networks, with some projects nearing operational readiness while others remain in early implementation stages.
