Russia-Ukraine conflict escalation

Overview

In late July 2026, Russia launched a large-scale barrage against Ukraine using over 70 missiles and approximately 280 drones. The strikes targeted Kyiv and several regions, including Dnipropetrovsk, Lviv, Kryvyi Rih, and Poltava, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries. In response to the attacks, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for increased air-defense support, specifically requesting more Patriot systems to address critical shortages.

By mid-August 2026, the conflict involved intensified drone warfare and retaliatory strikes. A Russian drone strike on a residential building in Marhanets killed a three-month-old boy and injured 11 others, including two children. Regional military administration chief Oleksandr Hanzha reported that seven of the injured were in serious condition. The attack damaged multi-story homes, a shop, and a cinema.

In retaliation, Ukraine used Flamingo cruise missiles to strike a key Roskosmos electronics manufacturing plant in Russia’s Samara region. Russian Governor Wjatslaw Fedorischtschew reported high smoke columns following the strike. Concurrently, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have intercepted 598 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory and Crimea, while Ukrainian drone strikes in the Zaporizhzhia district and near Moscow caused several injuries.
