Pakistan-India airspace restrictions

Overview

Pakistan has extended its airspace restrictions on Indian-registered aircraft, including military flights, through September 24, 2026. This measure is a reciprocal response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack in April 2025. The Pakistan Airports Authority confirmed the ban applies to the Karachi and Lahore flight information regions.

In addition to the ban, Pakistan issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) restricting a 750-kilometer stretch of airspace for two days, leading to speculation regarding potential tests of Fatah-series supersonic missile systems.

The airspace closure has caused significant operational and financial disruptions for major Indian carriers, including Air India, IndiGo, Air India Express, Akasa Air, and SpiceJet. Approximately 800 weekly flights are affected, with roughly 115 daily flights being cancelled or rerouted. These longer flight paths have increased costs for refueling, landing, and crew duties. Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport has seen a notable reduction in weekly flights to international destinations such as the United Kingdom, the United States, Frankfurt, Istanbul, and Almaty.
