Brazilian law enforcement operations against organized crime

Overview

Brazilian law enforcement agencies continue to conduct large-scale operations targeting organized crime, drug trafficking, and financial fraud across several states.

Recent enforcement includes Operation Snooker 2 in Ceará and Bahia, investigating corruption, money laundering, and import fraud at Fortaleza International Airport. In Rio de Janeiro, civil and military police are targeting the Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP) faction within the Complexo de Israel. Further specialized actions include Operation Dealer in Rio Grande do Norte, Operation Moega in Goiás, and Operation Artemis in Bahia.

In Mato Grosso, the Civil Police launched ‘Operação Dark Route’ to dismantle a criminal faction operating between Mato Grosso and Rio de Janeiro. Investigations by the Organized Crime Combat Management (GCCO/Draco) revealed that Rio de Janeiro served as an operational hub for command, logistics, and protection. The operation resulted in nine preventive arrest warrants and the seizure of luxury vehicles, including a Porsche Boxster GTS, valued at approximately R$ 1.5 million. Authorities noted the group’s significant military capacity, including the use of restricted-use rifles.

Additionally, the Federal Police launched Operação Bóreas to dismantle a criminal organization managing international air logistics for drugs and firearms. The group is suspected of transporting cocaine and weapons from Bolivia and Peru into Brazil via aircraft and clandestine airstrips. The operation led to the arrest of a Cuiabá entrepreneur and the seizure of aircraft and assets, with requests for ten suspects to be included in Interpol’s Red Notice system.

Other investigations include Operation Leste do Espinhaço regarding INSS fraud and Operation Presciência concerning financial irregularities in Mato Grosso do Sul.
