The political crisis in Romania has intensified following the failure of Prime Minister-designate Siegfried Mureșan’s investiture vote. On Wednesday, September 30, the proposed cabinet—supported by the PNL, USR, and UDMR coalition—received only 182 votes in favor, failing to reach the 233 votes required for a parliamentary majority. The shortfall was driven by significant opposition from the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and AUR. AUR leader George Simion stated that his party would not vote for any government until Călin Georgescu is released from detention. PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu criticized the proposed administration, labeling it a continuation of previous failed policies. During parliamentary hearings, Mihai Dimian received a negative advisory opinion for the position of Minister of Education and Research, though such opinions are consultative and do not legally bind the final vote. This rejection marks the second failed attempt to form a government following the collapse of Ilie Bolojan's administration in May. Following the vote, President Nicușor Dan announced he will convene political parties for consultations on Monday, October 5, with the intention of nominating a new prime minister candidate that same afternoon. While constitutional provisions may allow for the dissolution of Parliament if multiple government requests are rejected, the President emphasized that early elections are a “last resort” to avoid further political instability. Following the failed investiture, Siegfried Mureșan criticized the ministerial nominations proposed by the PSD. Mureșan, a PNL politician and European Parliament member, argued that his previous team had proposed competent individuals for 11 ministries capable of continuing reforms and modernizing the state. He asserted that a better government can only be achieved if a majority is formed through upcoming elections.
