Overview

A 26-year-old man of Russian origin was arrested following a deliberate vehicle attack near the Caen train station in France. The incident, which occurred on a Wednesday night, involved a black vehicle being driven into a crowd of pedestrians, resulting in at least two deaths and approximately ten injuries. Many of the victims were foreign nationals, including citizens from Afghanistan, Egypt, and Bangladesh.

As the investigation progressed, the suspect was identified as a Russian national of Chechen origin. Prosecutor Joël Garrigue stated that evidence indicates the driver did not attempt to brake, but instead “deviated his trajectory to make contact with the victims.”

While authorities have formally ruled out the “hypothesis of a terrorist act,” investigators are exploring different motives. The prosecutor noted the incident “could fall within a context of animosity between the Chechen and Afghan communities,” though the Mayor of Caen suggested a possible “romantic dispute.” The suspect, who has no prior criminal record, faces charges of murder and attempted murder.
