The Paris Assize Court has delivered its verdict in the trial regarding the March 19, 2022, fatal shooting of former Argentine international rugby player Federico Martín Aramburú. Loïk Le Priol, a 32-year-old former member of the French special forces and far-right activist, was sentenced to 26 years in prison for the murder. Romain Bouvier, 35, received a 19-year sentence for attempted murder and unauthorized possession of weapons and ammunition. While the court noted the defendants were motivated by a ‘fascination with weapons and violence,’ it determined they did not establish premeditation, self-defense, or mental disorders. Judge Franck Zientara specifically noted that Le Priol’s actions were driven by “narcissistic rage.” The resulting sentences were slightly lower than those requested by prosecutors. Both primary defendants were identified as former members of the far-right student group Groupe Union Défense (GUD). Following the verdict, Romain Bouvier’s lawyer confirmed that he has decided to appeal his 19-year sentence. During the trial, Bouvier admitted to firing shots but claimed he was aiming at the ground. Loïk Le Priol has not yet decided whether to appeal his sentence.
