Overview

The Paris Assize Court has delivered its verdict in the trial regarding the March 19, 2022, fatal shooting of former Argentine international rugby player Federico Martín Aramburú.

Loïk Le Priol, a 32-year-old former member of the French special forces and far-right activist, was sentenced to 26 years in prison for the murder. Romain Bouvier, 35, received a 19-year sentence for attempted murder and unauthorized possession of weapons and ammunition. While the court noted the defendants were motivated by a ‘fascination with weapons and violence,’ it determined they did not establish premeditation, self-defense, or mental disorders. Judge Franck Zientara specifically noted that Le Priol’s actions were driven by “narcissistic rage.” The resulting sentences were slightly lower than those requested by prosecutors.

Both primary defendants were identified as former members of the far-right student group Groupe Union Défense (GUD). The incident, which began with a dispute at a local brasserie in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district, resulted in Aramburú being pursued and shot multiple times.

Following the verdict, both primary defendants have moved to challenge their sentences. Romain Bouvier has filed an appeal against his 19-year sentence. Loïk Le Priol has also since decided to appeal his 26-year sentence. As a result of these appeals, both men will be retried before a new assize court.

Regarding the secondary defendants, Lyson Rochemir, the former partner of Le Priol, was sentenced to three years in prison, with 30 months suspended, for obstructing justice by concealing evidence. Antony Sorrentino received a three-year suspended sentence for his role in obstructing the investigation and aiding Bouvier’s escape.
