Samsung has officially unveiled the Galaxy SmartTag3, the third generation of its Bluetooth item tracking technology. The device features a compact, rounded-square or ‘squircle’ design that is approximately 35% smaller in volume and 33% lighter than the previous SmartTag2. This redesigned, “pebble-like” aesthetic lacks an integrated hole for keyrings, potentially requiring users to utilize separate holders, cases, or accessories for attachment. The model includes an aluminum-finished button and maintains an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance. While initial reports suggested expanded compatibility for a wide range of Android smartphones, Samsung clarified that the SmartTag3 is primarily designed for the Galaxy ecosystem. The company confirmed it has no plans to extend support to other Android brands, such as Google Pixel devices. However, a major update for this model is the introduction of support for Apple iPhones via the Samsung SmartThings Find app, allowing Apple users to utilize the tracker alongside Galaxy users. Notably, iPhone support is limited and lacks certain features such as ‘Compass View’ and ‘Left Behind Alerts’. Advanced functions, including geofencing notifications, location history, and ‘Forget Alerts’, remain exclusive to the Samsung Galaxy ecosystem. Improved Compass View directional tracking is restricted to high-end models equipped with Bluetooth Channel Sounding, such as the Galaxy S26+ and Galaxy Z Fold 8 series. Technical specifications include Bluetooth 6.0 Channel Sounding, which extends the ‘Compass View’ range to 60 meters, alongside Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology. The device, available in black and white, is powered by a replaceable CR2032 battery offering up to 550 days of ~~use.
