North Macedonia judicial reform initiatives
Overview
North Macedonian Minister of Justice Jeton Shasivari has initiated several reform efforts aimed at aligning the national justice system with European standards.
Initially, the Ministry focused on judicial reforms through dialogue with legal professionals and academic institutions. This included addressing controversies surrounding the jurisprudence exam, specifically regarding language barriers. Shasivari proposed consultative meetings with law faculty deans and student associations to discuss legal solutions, including the possibility of offering exams in English, Turkish, and Albanian to ensure a sustainable and constitutional framework.
Following these efforts, the reform agenda expanded to include the digitalization of the justice system. In collaboration with KING ICT Macedonia, the Ministry began discussing IT management and data security under the ‘Improved digitalization of state institutions in the field of justice and the fight against corruption’ initiative. This digital transformation is intended to enhance system efficiency, security, and resilience.
