Armed violence in Zacapa, Guatemala
Overview
In Huité, Zacapa, at least seven to eight people were killed during a series of armed attacks on September 27. The violence spanned multiple locations, including the El Campo neighborhood and La Oscurana village, where investigators recovered 77 ballistic indicators. Among the victims were three women found in a vehicle.
Local residents and families have accused the state of involvement, citing videos of armed men in military-style clothing and reports of helicopters firing. They alleged that the attacks targeted “innocent civilians who were defenseless.”
The Guatemalan Army has denied participation, stating that the individuals in the videos were not military personnel and attributing the violence to “territorial disputes between transnational organized crime groups.” The military further stated it did not enter the immediate area to avoid escalating the conflict. Interior Minister Marco Antonio Villeda ruled out police involvement, while the National Civil Police is investigating whether criminal structures planned the actions to create regional instability.
