Unrest in Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir
Overview
Protests in Pakistan-administered Jammu and Kashmir, led by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), have entered a period of heightened tension. Following over 100 days of unrest, the JAAC signaled a potential escalation around an October 4 deadline, advising residents in Rawalakot to stockpile essential supplies in anticipation of prolonged shutdowns or the closure of regional entry points.
During large-scale demonstrations, JAAC leadership criticized the Pakistani military establishment, demanding the abolition of the Line of Control and calling for the region to be treated as a neighbor rather than a subordinate.
The Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JKJAAC) has since warned that the government’s response to dissent may drive the population toward militancy. The group has accused high-ranking officials of failing to maintain security and alleged that local authorities, including the Chief Secretary and Inspector General of Police, have used excessive force, arbitrary detentions, and raids against civilians and journalists.
