Violence against social leaders in Colombia
Overview
Violence against social leaders and human rights defenders in Colombia has shown varying trends throughout 2026. According to the Colombian Ombudsman’s Office, 126 social leaders were assassinated during the first nine months of 2026, including 12 signatories of the 2016 Peace Agreement. This period saw 94 massacres across various departments, with Cauca, Antioquia, and Valle del Cauca remaining the most heavily affected regions.
Data from the Somos Defensores program indicates that while the total number of murders in the first half of the year decreased compared to the previous year, other forms of aggression rose. Attacks against defenders increased by 68%, and threats rose from 175 to 242 cases. A significant portion of these incidents occurred during May and June, coinciding with presidential election cycles. Additionally, violence against female leaders saw a 30% increase in aggressions compared to the first half of the previous year.
In October 2026, reports from the José Alvear Restrepo Lawyers Collective (CAJAR) and the Ombudsman's Office highlighted an escalation of death threats. On October 18, several individuals, including Yessika Hoyos Morales of CAJAR and spokespersons for the National Movement of Victims of State Crimes (MOVICE) Sucre Chapter, received mobile phone threats. These threats demanded they cease work related to a judicial process involving William Martínez Santamaría, the former director of Comfasucre. Martínez Santamaría was sentenced in September 2026 to 27 years in prison for his role in the 2018 La Guripa massacre in Sucre.
