Israel-Hezbollah conflict in southern Lebanon

Overview

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon involves ongoing military operations and complex diplomatic negotiations regarding territorial control. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has stated that any Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory is contingent upon the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) being able to assert control and disarm Hezbollah to prevent a security vacuum.

On the ground, Israeli military actions have targeted infrastructure and underground structures, resulting in significant damage to dozens of towns within 10 kilometers of the border and the displacement of over 340,000 people. While Israel maintains strategic positions to exert fire control south of the Litani River, Hezbollah has reportedly transitioned to guerrilla warfare tactics.

Hezbollah Secretary General Naim Qassem has predicted that the liberation of southern Lebanon is inevitable and that Israeli forces will eventually be forced to withdraw. Concurrently, the Israel Defense Forces are moving to establish a strategic Space Brigade within the IDF General Staff, following a Hezbollah strike on a satellite station earlier in 2026.
