Pinula River flooding in San Miguel Petapa

Overview

In San Miguel Petapa, Guatemala, authorities began evaluating the impact of rising levels in the Pinula River. Following a Constitutional Court order, the Ministry of Communications, Infrastructure and Housing (CIV) and the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred) initiated technical analyses in Villa Hermosa to assess bridge structures and potential subsidies for affected families.

As the situation progressed, assessments revealed a significant emergency in sectors II and IV of Villa Hermosa. Reports indicated that 116 homes sustained severe damage, with an additional 499 homes at risk. A total of 2,763 people were identified as being in a condition of risk due to flooding and soil erosion.

Heavy rains have undermined the ground, threatening the structural integrity of the Pinula Bridge, a critical transit route. In response, 15 institutions, including the National Civil Police and the Ministry of Defense, have coordinated emergency efforts. While municipal shelters have been established, authorities noted that no residents had relocated to these facilities at the time of the latest assessment.
