European electricity market price volatility
Overview
European electricity and gas prices have faced upward pressure due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. In mid-September, Portugal’s Energy Services Regulatory Authority (ERSE) announced an increase in regulated market electricity tariffs effective October 1, estimating a 2.7% rise in average monthly bills for approximately 779,000 consumers. This adjustment followed an increase in the 2026 price variation forecast from 1% to 1.7% due to rising spot market prices.
By October, data indicated that European Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) prices rose by 5% in September. This trend was attributed to higher forward electricity and gas prices and volatility in the EEX electricity futures market linked to Middle East tensions. While Great Britain, Italy, and Poland saw significant price increases, the Iberian Peninsula experienced declines, with prices falling 3.5% in Spain and 1.4% in Portugal.
