Aubagne school shooting investigation

Overview

A 14-year-old student was arrested after a shooting at the Joseph-Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, France. The suspect allegedly used a 12-gauge hunting rifle, concealed in a guitar case, to wound a school principal and a teacher. While some students sustained minor injuries from debris, no students were seriously harmed. A staff member disarmed the teenager before police arrived.

The National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office is investigating the incident as a suspected attempted murder in connection with terrorist activity. Investigators are examining potential links between the suspect and the ‘True Crime Community’ (TCC), an online group that celebrates mass shooters.

Following the attack, the teenager was placed in pretrial detention. The suspect reportedly claimed he was motivated by revenge but denied intent to kill, stating he aimed for non-lethal areas. Authorities also detained a 13-year-old boy for questioning regarding message exchanges on TikTok with the shooter. While a psychological examination did not find evidence of mental pathology, the defense has requested further expert assessments. Additionally, the suspect's father was detained to investigate how the weapon was obtained.
