Residential and commercial fires in France

Overview

On October 19, 2026, two separate fires occurred in Angers and Fougères. In Angers, an apartment fire in the Lac de Maine district destroyed a unit and resulted in one hospitalization and several evacuations. In Fougères, a fire at the L’Aquatis aquatic center destroyed a wooden sauna, potentially due to an electrical short circuit, leading to the evacuation of approximately fifty people.

On October 20, 2026, further incidents were reported in Brimeux and Nice. A house fire in Brimeux left three occupants without a home, prompting an investigation by the Gendarmerie. In Nice, an apartment fire forced the evacuation of 22 people; preliminary police findings suggest the blaze was accidental, caused by an intoxicated occupant leaving a frying pan on a stove.
