Fukushima Daiichi decommissioning and water discharge

Overview

Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) is continuing decommissioning operations at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. In early October 2026, TEPCO commenced its 24th round of discharging ALPS treated water, a process involving approximately 7,800 cubic meters of water with a projected tritium content of 1.2 trillion Becquerels. TEPCO reported that tritium concentrations after dilution remain significantly below regulatory and WHO standards.

By late October, decommissioning efforts expanded to include the resumption of experimental nuclear fuel debris removal in Unit 2, following a temporary suspension caused by a robot arm failure. Additionally, TEPCO began its 25th discharge of treated water, releasing approximately 7,800 tonnes over a 19-day period. These water releases are intended to reduce on-site storage tank numbers to facilitate further decommissioning activities. The government and TEPCO aim to complete the decommissioning process by 2051.
