Profepa environmental enforcement in Mexico
Overview
The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) has conducted several enforcement actions across Mexico to halt unauthorized activities.
In Campeche, authorities imposed security measures and closures on forest lands near the ejidos of Crucero San Luis, Ich Ek, and Xcupilcacab. The intervention followed the discovery of 12 unauthorized charcoal production ovens and evidence of selective harvesting of tropical hardwoods across approximately 6 hectares of land. Profepa suspended all forest raw material harvesting in these areas.
In coastal regions, Profepa ordered the temporary closure of unauthorized construction projects. In Manzanillo, Colima, works at La Boquita beach were halted due to the construction of tourism-related structures within the Juluapan Lagoon wetland ecosystem, which contains protected white mangrove vegetation. In Alvarado, Veracruz, authorities issued a closure for the Mare Vera real estate development, a project involving the urbanization of over 13 hectares. Despite the placement of closure seals, reports indicated that construction activities continued at the Veracruz site.
